A Neuronal Model of a Global Workspace in Effortful Cognitive Tasks

Stanislas Dehaene, Michel Kerszberg, Jean-Pierre Changeux · Nov 24, 1998

The move from metaphor to mechanism. Dehaene and colleagues give the workspace a neuronal substrate: long-range cortical neurons that bind distributed processors into a coherent, sustained state. This is the "global neuronal workspace", and its prediction that access involves dense long-range connectivity is exactly what Anthropic report as ≈100× connection density in the J-space.
